Burglary of pensioners condemned

SDLP South Down MLA Seán Rogers and Cllr Laura Devlin have condemned a burglary that took place in Castlewellan on Saturday evening.

Speaking to Newry Times, Rogers said, “I was shocked as the news broke on Saturday evening of the burglary of a pensioner’s home in Castlewellan.

“I understand that the couple, who are in their 80s, left to go to mass as usual and returned to their Newcastle Road home an hour or so later to find their house ransacked and items stolen. This is a deeply disturbing incident. For the assailants to know this couple’s routine is even more sinister.

“We all deserve to be happy, secure and safe in our own home and even more so for those who are older and have contributed so much to the fabric of the community.

“My thoughts are with the couple and their family at this traumatic time. I would urge anyone with any information about Saturday’s incident to contact the PSNI immediately.”

South Down Cllr Laura Devlin added, “I know the couple and they were still clearly shaken and upset when I called on them on Sunday. This is a very well respected family who are an integral part of the community of Castlewellan and have been so for many years.

Devlin added, “For anyone to have their home and personal space violated in such a way is totally unacceptable and must be condemned to the highest hilt.”
