Police in Newry are investigating a suspected assault on a 2 year old girl in the Bessbrook area on the evening of Sunday, 19th October. Speaking to Newry Times, Superintendent Simon Walls said, “The child has been taken to hospital following this incident. A man in his 20’s has been arrested and is currently assisting police. “Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area of Charlemont Square East, Bessbrook around 7.45pm on Sunday, 19th October and who may have witnessed an altercation or seen any suspicious activity to contact Police on the non emergency number 101. Walls added, “Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.” Reacting to the news, SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley has said that he is shocked by the incident. “This is a shocking and deeply disturbing incident. Violent crime, in all its forms, has no place in our society but the assault of a toddler is particularly appalling. “I know this strong community will rally round the young child’s family. My thoughts are with the child and I sincerely hope, as does the majority of people in this community, that she will make a full and speedy recovery. Bradley added, “I would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area last night to assist police in their investigations.”
