Volunteers sought for First World War project at Newry Museum

Newry and Mourne Museum is currently seeking two additional temporary volunteers to assist with its Heritage Lottery funded First World War Project looking at the impact of the war on the Newry and Mourne area.

Volunteers will be involved in various tasks including assisting with exhibitions and events, transcribing newspaper articles and handwritten documents, and entering biographical information into a database of local servicemen, nurses and chaplains.

Suitable candidates should meet the following:

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

(1) Experience of carrying out historical research

(2) Be computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases

(3) Be able to commit to a minimum of one day per week for six continuous months (preferably a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 10am – 4pm) and;

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

(1) Studying towards, or have, a degree in history, or related subject

(2) Willing to carry out research at sites other than Newry and Mourne Museum, e.g. in Armagh or Belfast (Travel expenses for such offsite work may be reimbursed.)

Training will be provided and volunteers will be able to complete accredited OCN Level 1 and 2 (GCSE level) qualifications.

Dr Robert Whan, who will supervise the volunteers, said, “This is an excellent opportunity for the two individuals to gain an insight into working in a heritage and museum context.

“The volunteers will be able to work alongside museum staff to develop existing skills, as well as learning new skills through training and valuable on-the-job experience.”
