Newry motorists warned about ‘jumping red lights’

South Down Neighourhood Policing Team are warning motorists not to take risks with their lives by jumping red lights.

Speaking to Newry Times, Inspector Andy McGowan, South Down NPT, said, “We have received complaints about motorists jumping red lights.

“Not only are those motorists taking real risks with their own safety but they are also putting other road users, particularly pedestrians who wait on the signal to cross, in danger.

“So far this year 18 people have lost their lives on roads in E District and we do not want to see this number increase any further.

“We will be conducting patrols in this area and motorists who ignore the rules of the road can expect to face penalties or prosecution.

He added, “I am asking all drivers to slow down and be mindful of traffic signals.”
