Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the support of the Minister of Agriculture Michelle O’Neill in her commitment to aquaculture industry. Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “I wrote to the Minister in order to garner support for the aquaculture industry which is strong in the South Down area. “The aquaculture industry which mainly consists of shell fish has great potential given the quality of the crop in Irish waters so it is important that we protect the industry and the jobs associated with it. “The Minister has assured me that she has written to her counterpart in the South to organise a conference on an all Ireland basis to look at the aquaculture industry. The conference will look at combatting disease, marketing, funding training, environmental issues and the expansion of the industry. Ruane added, “This conference will be an opportunity to show that both Ministers are committed to not only protecting the standards but also expanding the industry and continuing to maintain the quality that Irish shellfish is renown for worldwide.”
