Ministers announce roll out of Community Family Support Programme

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today announced the roll out of the Community Family Support Programme to 720 families across Northern Ireland.

The Community Family Support Programme (CFSP) is an initiative from the Department for Employment and Learning’s (DEL) ‘Pathways to Success’ Strategy designed to support parents and prevent younger family members from falling into the Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) category.

A key focus of the initiative is also to assist NEET young people to re-engage with education, training or employment. The programme was successfully piloted earlier this year. It is one of six designated Delivering Social Change Signature Programmes.

Minister Farry said, “As part of delivering the social change framework, I can announce the up-scaling of the Community Family Support Programme to support 720 families in the community across Northern Ireland.”

“During the 26-week programme, families will receive assistance from professionally qualified family support workers to address the health, social, economic, educational, employment and training issues that impact on their daily lives.

“The programme will be delivered by support organisations in the heart of the community and a family learning component will be an integral part of the provision aimed at enhancing parenting and family life skills. This programme will provide disengaged young people and their families with the inspiration, motivation and confidence to have a new start and be positive role models for other young people in the community.”

The programme will also provide one to one employment advice and mentoring to family members and supports them with job search, CV writing, interview techniques and presentation skills. Family members will also be able to complete short accredited training courses and work placements.
