Ruane commends Midnight Gaels success

Sinn Fein MLA Caitriona Ruane has praised the organisers of Midnight Gaels as having the foresight to merge sport, fun and social education in an effort to tackle what she described as the ‘drug menace’.

Speaking to Newry Times after attending a session of Midnight Gaels, Ruane stated, “I think that the community owes Noeleen McPolin and Mickey McArdle of Drumgath GAC a huge thank you for the innovative way they approached drug education by incorporating it into a midnight football session.

“It is important that we employ new ways to bring drug education to our young people and this is a prime example of how we can achieve it.

“I visited the project on Friday night and the young people who took part in the Midnight Gaels programme over the past few weeks really enjoyed the craic while learning about the danger of drugs.

Ruane added, “I am sure that many more young people will pass through the scheme and I would encourage parents to also come along as it is also importance they learn about the dangers that drugs pose in our society.”
