Brady fumes at £27m Housing Executive underspend

Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady along with his party colleagues on the DSD committee have questioned an underspend of £27 million by the Housing Executive.

Speaking about the issue Mr Brady said, “It is amazing to learn that there has been an under spend of £27 million in the last financial year in the Housing Executive.

“We are constantly hearing of families losing their homes and part of this is due to the decline in the construction industry and people losing their jobs.

“At a time that the demand for housing has been at an all-time high it is unimaginable that this amount of money has gone unspent.

“The amount of construction jobs that could have been created with additional much needed housing and maintenance work to the existing houses is huge and is a blow to those who have been calling on the Minister for Social Development to deal with the housing crisis.

He added, “My colleague Fra McCann has submitted a question to the minister to ascertain if the same is going to happen to the housing budget for next year. We wait with interest to hear his response.”
