Royal County Down is ‘best golf course outside USA’
South Down Alliance Party spokesperson Councillor Patrick Clarke has congratulated the Royal County Down golf club in Newcastle which was recently ranked the best golf course in the world outside the USA and also rated number one golf course in the world for a green fee paying golf course.
Clarke stated, “To receive such high world rankings proves the quality and calibre of this world renowned golf links course which has seen many of the top world professionals play at Newcastle over the years including our own Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.”
“In terms of tourism and the local economy the Royal County Down golf course in Newcastle being ranked by international golf ranking bodies has to be good for the local hospitality industry as well as shops and other tourist attractions.”
He continued, “Our local economy depends quite a lot on the tourism industry and also having world leading golf links courses such as Newcastle is an added attraction when tourists are deciding to stay in Newcastle and Northern Ireland.”
“Royal County Down Golf Club, which opened in 1889, is one of the oldest and well known golf clubs in Ireland. The Championship Links course has some of the most beautiful scenery. The unique landscape incorporates both the Dundrum Bay coastline and the neighbouring Mourne Mountains.”
“There can be no doubt the American, Australian and European market enjoys their golf and with Royal County Down golf course being ranked world number one outside the USA has certainly set the standard for other golf links courses in Ireland to follow,” Clarke added.
