Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said she intends to raise the latest attack on Ballymartin GAC pitch at the highest levels of the PSNI.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ms. Ruane said, “This is the latest major attack on the pitches where the Ballymartin GAC train. Again the goal posts have been damaged and again the ratepayer will have to foot the cost of the damage. We have also seen the erection of the Union flags around the training pitch.

“Over the past few days we have Unionist leaders complain that there is no tolerance for anything British yet here these incidents show a total intolerance of anything Irish in the Kilkeel area. The Unionist community leaders must show good leadership and state categorically that these attacks are wrong.

Ruane added, “These pitches are used only to provides a sporting environment for young people and I would appeal for the local community to ensure that their training area remains free from vandalism.

“I intend to raise this issue at the highest levels of the PSNI as to why no one has been held accountable for these continuing attacks.”
