Burns expresses ‘disgust’ at BT response times for pensioner

Sinn Fein councillor Colman Burns has said he is disgusted with BT’s poor response times in repairing faults on telephone lines. He was speaking after visiting an 88 year old lady from Dorsey, who was still unable to make or receive calls on her phone, fourteen days after the fault was reported.

Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Burns blasted BT. “This is a disgraceful case and should be a hugely embarrassing situation for the telephone company. Despite repeated calls from family and neighbours, BT have failed to get this ladies phone operating again.

“The woman’s daughter has been told on different occasions that the phone would be back operating in a number of hours, yet, nothing has happened. This case is all the more serious, given that this ladies phone is connected to the lifeline service and BT are aware of this.”

The councillor continued, “This is one of a number of cases over the last year that our offices have had to deal with. In each of the cases, telephones were out of action for days, and in some cases weeks, while BT tried to locate and repair the fault.

“The present situation cannot continue. The people in this area deserve a much better service.

He added, “Sinn Fein will be seeking a meeting with British Telecom over this case and the many other cases where the telephone company have failed to live up to their responsibilities. We will be telling them in no uncertain terms that the present service is totally inadequate and changes have got to be made sooner rather than later.”
