Speaking to Newry Times, Fearon said: “Tyson Fury is due to box in Belfast on Saturday night so we were delighted that he took time out of his training to visit the Assembly.

“He lent his support to the initiative to put £3m into boxing clubs across the North as he knows from first hand experience how many clubs struggle to provide proper facilities

She added, “This funding is welcome news for boxing clubs throughout the North. These clubs are mostly in working class communities and have suffered from under-funding for many years with poor facilities the norm rather than the exception.

“With boxers from Ireland leading the way at the Olympics it is important that we keep the great Irish tradition of providing great boxers alive.”
