Ruane wants safety lights outside Hilltown Primary School

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has met with Michael Scott from DRD Roads Service to lobby for flashing lights outside Hilltown primary school.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ms. Ruane stated, “I am concerned and have questioned the fact that St Patrick’s Primary School have been removed as a priority to have traffic lights installed since last year.

“I had received several requests from parents calling for safety lights to be situated at the school and I lobbied the DRD Road Service on their behalf. While the DRD Road Service have implemented a number of road safety measures outside St Patrick’s primary school Hilltown they have not installed the flashing lights.

“The safety of our children is paramount and I was extremely concerned about the safety of the children attending this school as it is situated on a busy road.

Ruane added, “The instillation of these flashing lights will alert unsuspecting motorists to the fact that there is a school along their route and allow them to take precautions such as lowering their speed in anticipation of children in the vicinity.”
