Newry Canal set for Rowing Ireland Trials visit

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November, Newry Canal is the venue for Rowing Ireland’s Trials. This event is the first in a series of trials and assessments used as part of Rowing Ireland’s selection process for its 2013 International Rowing Squads

The trial is open to Junior, Under-23’s and Seniors.

On Saturday 24th, all rowers must complete a 2000 metre ergometer test, and subject to meeting a minimum standard, will then complete a 5000 metre time-trial on the Canal on Sunday 25th.

Although this is not a Council event, the Council is always anxious to promote activities which utilize the water courses of Newry City be it recreational canoeing, sailing or on this occasion, elite rowing trials.

Welcoming the event to Newry the Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor John McArdle said:

“I am delighted that once again Rowing Ireland has chosen Newry Canal as a venue for the trials for the 2013 International Rowing Squad. Any event which gives us an opportunity to highlight our historic waterway is to be welcomed and I look forward to visiting the Trials at the weekend.”
