‘Stamp out Stigma’ campaign commended

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon attended the NI Action Mental Health’s (NIAMH) stamping out the stigma campaign at the Assembly on Monday past.

Speaking to Newry Times about the event, Fearon said,

“NIAMH is one of the largest and longest established independent charities focusing on mental health and well-being services throughout the north. NIAMH provides key services to people affected by mental health difficulties.

“One in four people suffer with mental health problems. With rising unemployment and increasing pressures on people’s lives, this has been a growing concern. It is therefore important that people seek help and don’t try to cope with everything on their own.

She added, “Stigma is still an issue for people with mental health difficulties so people often suffer in silence and do not seek help.

“I commend NIAMH and other organisations who campaign endlessly to remove the stigma that is associated with mental health illness. We need to make more people aware of the importance of mental health.”
