Fearon ‘supports’ EU campaign to lower voting age to 16

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has congratulated Martina Anderson for raising the issue of extending voting age to 16 year olds in Europe.

Speaking to Newry Times, Fearon said,

“Many young people are disenfranchised from the electoral process even though at 16 young people are very politically aware and able to make informed choices. Martina Anderson has met with representatives from the National Youth Council Ireland and strongly welcomed the initiative to lower the minimum age to vote to 16.

“Martina has signed a declaration calling for the EU Member States to lower the minimum voting age. Elected representatives across the board need to waken up and recognise the widening gap between themselves and the citizens, especially the younger generation, they represent.”

She added, “Much more must be done to engage with this sector of society and it is absolutely vital that young people have the right to democratic participation through voting for the politicians who make decisions impacting on their lives.”
