Letters to the Editor, ‘Overwhelming no to National Park’

Dear Editor,

As you are probably aware, there was a meeting last Monday night between farmers of the Mourne AONB, Fermanagh Lakes and the Causeway Coast and Glens and Minister Alex Attwood with regard to the National Park issue. There was an overwhelming ‘No’ vote at the end of the meeting.

A further meeting was held on Tuesday night at Leitrim Town Hall where a short presentation was given. This was supported by Mr Harold McKee, (deputy chair of the Mourne AONB Residents’ Action Group), and concerns of those present were addressed.

The local farmers, landowners, communities and families were able to voice their opinion on the National Park proposal. Again a unanimous “No” vote was recorded.

A further meeting is being organised for Tuesday 4th September in the Slieve Donard Hotel at 8pm when we hope all MLAs and elected representatives will be present to answer any concerns locals may have.

This is a very important meeting for the whole community and we would urge all, not just the farmers, to attend. This issue may impact upon the industrial and retail life of our communities as well as farming.

Yours faithfully,

Valerie Hanna
