The Bessbrook Cup second round fixtures took place on Saturday while a whole host of clubs kicked off their league campaigns. Premier Division The performance of the day goes to Woodside as they put in a devastating show to trounce Damolly United 10-1! Goals from Sean McConell(2), Stephen Bradley, Darren Edgar, Joe McDermott, Brendan Doran, David Doran, Sean Havern, David McCabe and Kyle Cartmill secured an emphatic victory and Woodside are now joint leaders of the Premier Division along with Killeavy United. Elsewhere, Rockview United picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 over Kilkeel Athletic up at Derrybeg. Last season’s First Division runners up North End Strollers got a little revenge on Champions Whitecross as they recorded a 5-3 win at the Barley Field. First Division Milburn United sit joint top of the table after they saw off the challenge of Shanro in Murdock Park. It was stalemate at half time but Milburn came out in rampant form in the second half. Jason Kelly came off the bench to open the scoring, Packy McNulty made it two, Tommy McNally rounded the ‘keeper for the third before David Murphy scored direct from a corner to seal all three points. In the league’s other fixtures, Rostrevor Rovers played out at 3-3 draw with Ashgrove Rovers at Kilbroney while league newcomers Newry Hibs are yet to get off the mark after they went down 3-0 to Cartwheel United in Crossmaglen. Kehoe cars Bessbrook Cup Villa Rovers continued their unbeaten start to the season but were pushed all the way by a gutsy Midway United. Villa dominated the opening exchanges and took the lead 20 minutes into the game when Darren Quinn latched onto a long through ball before keeping his cool and slotting the ball past the keeper. Villa had plenty of chances to increase their lead in the remainder of the half only for some poor finishing to let them down in the final third. Midway levelled the tie 25 minutes into the second half after a shot from distance appeared to be going wide before a heavy deflection off a Villa defender took it past the stranded ‘keeper Jude Rooney. Both sides cancelled each other out for the remainder of the 90 minutes and extra time but it was Villa who edged into the next round after they got the better of Midway in a tense penalty shoot out. Noel McPolin was the Villa hero when he held his nerve to convert the winning penalty in sudden death. Villa will now face the in-form Ballybot United at Jennings Park next Saturday in the last eight.
