DOE to hold information day for local taxi operators

The DOE has announced it will be holding an Information Day in Newry for taxi operators to provide advice and guidance on the application process after it emerged that the Taxi Operator Licensing is being introduced on 1st September 2012.

Speaking to Newry Times, a DOE spokesperson explained: “Taxi operators will have the option of purchasing a one, three or five-year licence. The initial application fee will be reduced from £140 to £40 for all applications received between 1st September and 31st October 2012.

“Taxi operator licensing will improve the level of service to the customer by ensuring accountability and self regulation within the industry. For the first time it will make the link between the person taking the booking, the person driving the taxi and the passenger. It will help reduce illegal taxiing as licensed operators will only be able to use properly licensed vehicles and drivers.”

The Information Day will run from 10.00am to 5.00pm on 29th August 2012 at the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.

Fees for operator licensing and a fee calculator are available at the DOE website at http://www.doeni.gov.uk/publications-details.htm?docid=8622
