Clarke requests better cleaning resources for Newcastle Beach

Alliance Newcastle Councillor Patrick Clarke has requested the cleaning schedules and rotas for the cleaning of Newcastle beach by Down District Council. Clarke has asked for this information as he believes not enough resources are presently being deployed to keep and maintain Newcastle beach. Councillor Clarke also believes that Newcastle Beach is not being continually cleaned twelve months of the year similar to other beaches.

Speaking to Newry Times, Clarke stated, “I am concerned that Newcastle beach has not been given the adequate resources which would enable Newcastle beach to be cleaned on a daily basis twelve months of the year. I have asked the Environmental Services Department to furnish me with the last month’s cleaning schedules and rotas for the cleaning of Newcastle beach to establish clearly how many cleaning staff clean Newcastle beach and how often.”

“I received two complaints over the weekend about parts of Newcastle beach and believe that Council have not properly addressed and deployed more cleaning staff to specifically clean and monitor Newcastle beach for which the Council is responsible. If Down District Council wants to attract tourists to Newcastle beach then more resources are needed to clean the beach as well as bins which are urgently needed too.”

He added, “I will be raising this matter about Newcastle beach at the next Newcastle area Councillors meeting which is scheduled to take place with Council officials this Friday in Newcastle.”
