‘Olympic Torch symbolises hope for all’ – McKevitt
SDLP Culture, Arts and Leisure spokesperson Karen McKevitt has spoken of her pride at those people from the North of Ireland who helped the Olympic torch on its journey through NI en route to London.
Speaking to Newry Times, the South Down MLA said: “The Olympic flame symbolises so much – the triumph of hope and endeavour over darker forces in our society, the coming together of disparate people of all abilities and backgrounds, something that truly puts the unity back into community.”
“The success of the visit of the flame to the North is testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved, from the local Olympic committees to the police and most of all to those who carried the torch – particularly those from my own area!”
She continued, “These were people from all walks of life – from local celebrities to the likes of Newry’s Ryan Cinnamond, who displayed that ambition and hope are no respecters of physical obstacles and that anything is possible for those who believe in themselves.”
“To everyone who took part or helped organise, marshal and protect the route, I offer my thanks and that of the SDLP for providing an exciting, colourful and moving few days,” McKevitt added.
