SDLP Culture spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA has welcomed the decision by Communications Minister Ed Vaizey to make RTE TV channels available on Freeview. The SDLP has made representations to the Minister for these channels to be made available following the digital TV switchover in October.

The South Down MLA said: “This is fantastic news which will be very much welcomed by the thousands of people across the North who enjoy watching RTE channels.

“It is great that the Communications Minister has seen sense and has included services from the South in his digital switchover plans. The SDLP made several representations about this issue both in the Assembly and at Westminster and we are happy that there has been a successful outcome.”

She added, “There are very useful schemes being run to help vulnerable people adapt to this TV switchover in October and I urge anyone seeking information on this to contact my office or visit www.digitaluk.co.uk .”
