Newry & Armagh DUP Assembly member Cllr. William Irwin MLA has slammed a hoax bomb alert in Newry which caused disruption for several hours. Petrol bombs and stones were also thrown at Police who were dealing with the device with one officer sustaining minor injuries.

Irwin branded those responsible for the attack as “thugs” and stated, “This is shocking and it is becoming a big issue for everyone in Newry, traders, visitors to the City and of course residents. The disruption being caused and the threat to safety is immense.”

He added, “Those behind this attack are thugs with nothing to offer Newry only the ruining of its hard earned reputation as a bustling trading centre. I would appeal to those in the community who may suspect who is behind these attacks to contact the PSNI immediately and pass on any snippet of information which could prove vital in follow up investigations.”
