Irwin welcomes Newry jobs announcement

Newry & Armagh DUP Assemblyman William Irwin MLA has welcomed the go-ahead for a multi-use development at Greenbank on the Warrenpoint Road in Newry. The scheme, which will feature large retail units, cafes and social housing aims to provide 1,130 jobs was announced yesterday and Irwin believes it will be a welcome boost for the city.

Speaking to Newry Times, he stated, “This is tremendous news for Newry and the surrounding area and it comes at a time when the construction industry is under severe pressure. This development is substantial and will create much needed work in the construction sector and of course provide employment for many people when completed.”

He added, “It is certainly an exciting project and hopefully it will lead to a strengthening of the economy in the city in the longer term and also assist in increasing footfall and visitors numbers to the area. There are of course existing operations on the proposed site so it is vital that every effort is made to relocate these jobs within the area and not lose this important existing source of employment.”
