Agriculture Minister visits Ballyhornan

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed the visit of Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill to Ballyhornan. The Minister was there to speak with the Ballyhornan Regeneration Interagency Group to discuss some of the problems facing that community.

Speaking to Newry Times, Mr Hazzard said, “Some of the problems that were raised with the Minister were the removal of the military fencing and huts left from the time that this was a British Military base and the need for the Department of Environment Road Service to adopt the area so that proper roads, street lighting and footpaths can be provided. One major issue that needs to be addressed straight away is one of sewage where the present system is totally inadequate and raw sewage is spilling into the sea. This is not only a environmental matter but one of the health of local residents.”

Hazzard added, “I pressed on Minister O’Neill the need to have broadband available in rural areas and that it is expanded into the Ballyhornan area as a new computer suite has opened yet cannot yet avail of broadband coverage. I will continue to work with the Minister and local residents to ensure that the statutory agencies provide the proper services to that community.”
