During the remainder of the half the scoring rate improved a little and Clonduff led 1-3 to 0-5 at the interval. Overall the second half was dominated by the home side and they gradually increased their lead and were the more capable team in front of goal. The Minors started their campaign with a home win over Atticall last Tuesday. Players to lead by example were Michael McStay, Jamie McComb, Paul Trimble, Pearse Trimble, Daithi Young, Tiarnan Haughian, Aidan Rogers, Gareth McDowell and Darren Fitzpatrick. It was a good performance by the team particularly when the ball was moved first-time by the players and in terms of the work-rate. Thanks to Atticall for a competitive and sporting game.

Longstone U-16s played their first two league games of the season in the past two weeks and had two wins. First game was away to Dromara and winning margin was twelve points and last Thursday they recorded a big win at home to Tullylish after a slow start. Players to impress were Owen Haughian, Conor Kelly, Michael McAstocker, Paddy Fegan, Gareth McDowell, Aidan Rogers, Darren Fitzpatrick and Tyrone Poland. Overall the whole team gave a very good display in both games in terms of work-rate and ability.

The U-14s played in the Down Feile Peil na nOg on Easter Monday and had about 90 minutes of football on the Pairc Esler. The team played Baileglas, Atticall, Aughlisnafin, Drumgath and Drumaness, who won by a comfortable margin, which was Longstone’s only defeat in the group. The final was against Drumaness once more and this time Longstone played to the best of their ability and were narrowly defeated. It showed very good progress by the team from the earlier game against the same opposition. All the boys had a great experience playing on the county pitch and behaved very well. Thanks to Bord na nOg for organising the tournament. In recent weeks the U-14s have played two challenge games, away to Saul and home to Teconnaught, and their first league game is next Monday at home to Atticall.

The U-12s got their season off to a flying start recently carrying on from where they left off last year at U-10 level by winning a trophy on their first outing of the season at Kilcoo. They were unlucky in the 1st group stages with only score difference keeping them out of the cup competition in a group that contained Aughlisnafin, Downpatrick and Kilcoo. In the Div. 2 competition there were round robin games against Burren, Clanaderg and St John’s and three wins out of three set up a Shield final against Burren who they had narrowly defeated by one point in the group section. This team as is now the normal when in knockout competition are a match for anyone and with a display of skill and commitment in closing down, blocking and making the most of their scoring opportunities that came their way they ran out comfortable winners with everyone talking long after the final whistle had blown about their display. Well done to all these boys and girl and as usual they were a credit to their club and mentors. Keep up the good work. If you haven’t seen this team in action before try and watch them at some stage as they are a special bunch of players.

The U-12 and U-14 football squads were away on a bus trip to Croke Pk. on Sunday for the league semi-finals. The players had an enjoyable time, even though their team didn’t make the final, and thanks to the adults for supervising on the day.
