Police launch home safety campaign

Police in E District are launching a campaign to remind people to ensure jewellery and other small valuables are kept safe in their homes. Almost half of all domestic burglaries will involve the theft of jewellery and there are steps you can take to ensure that you hold on to your valuables.

Crime Prevention Officer Michelle Wilson explained, “Jewellery is small and easy to transport so is often one of the first things to be taken during a burglary or robbery. Don’t put all your jewellery in one place; burglars will check jewellery boxes, bedside cabinets and drawers. Find an alternative location for your jewellery. Consider investing in a home safe or safety deposit box. Ensure your jewellery is insured and photographed.”

Wilson added, “Make sure your home is locked and properly secured at all times. Be discreet – try to keep expensive items of jewellery covered from view when out and about.”

Police will distribute leaflets with advice on keeping your jewellery safe over the coming weeks. If you need any further advice you can contact your crime prevention officer on 0845 600 8000.
