McGreevy appointed to Voluntary Board of the Drainage Council

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has made new appointments to the voluntary board of the Drainage Council.  A local Councillor, the SDLP’s Connaire McGreevy has been appointed for the term 2012 – 2015.

A delighted Councillor McGreevy spoke to Newry Times following his appointment. “I am honoured to have been approved by the Minister Michelle O’Neill after applying for this post and being interviewed. I feel that I have a lot to offer this voluntary board with my degree in Geography giving me a good understanding of the nature of rivers. Rivers when they flood can have serious and consequential results on people and their property.”

McGreevy is the only Councillor from Down District Council and Newry and Mourne District Council areas that is on the board that covers all of Northern Ireland. He continued, “Being the only representative from Newry and Mourne and indeed Down District I want to champion those areas specifically. If anyone is aware of any rivers that are flooding and causing adverse affects on local people and their property I am keen to hear from them. The Drainage Council guides the work of the Rivers Agency and as such it is a vital board that does so much great work.”
