Newry 0 – 0 Ballymena (Under 18’s)

Newry and Ballymena shared the points on Saturday morning (17th March) in a hard fought game. With only one point separating  Ballymena and Newry in second and third place it was always going to be a tense affair and both teams struggled early on to get any sort of rhythm in to their play.

The first chance though came from a set piece to Newry; Steven Annett whipped in a terrific cross but Joel Annett couldn’t direct his header on target. A great move involving McMahon, Edgar and Cunningham saw another chance go begging and Edgar was also unlucky from another set piece with a diving header. The best chances were all falling to Newry and maybe with better decision making in the final third they could have opened Ballymena up but the score remained goalless at halftime.

The visitors had clearly come with a game plan to make sure they got away with at least a point and their only real effort in anger was a 30 yard drive early in the second half which sailed just over the bar. Newry continued to press and the excellent Redpath was unlucky when he just failed to connect to a Gourley pass and Lenanghan hit a good effort which the ‘keeper did well to turn round the post.

With eighty eight minutes of hard battle behind them and the game heading for a stalemate Newry thought they had won it in the dying minutes but when Lenaghan had a great effort cleared off the line and then Quinn also saw his effort blocked right on the line with the last kick of the game they knew it was not to be.

Nobody could fault Newry’s effort and commitment during this contest; the players gave everything they had but unfortunately lady luck deserted them in their quest for all three points.
