Crossmaglen Northern Bank to close

There was widespread disappointment throughout the community today after it emerged that the Crossmaglen Northern Bank branch will close at the end of May. Tony Wilcox, managing director of retail and private banking, said the branches had been found “less sustainable” than others. According to Wilcox, customer accounts will automatically transfer to the Newry branch. It is believed that no jobs will be lost as a result of the closures but Northern Bank customers will have to make the journey to Newry for services.

Northern Bank blamed the closure on changing customer habits. Wilcox said, “I fully understand that this news will be disappointing to some of our customers, but I would like to reassure them that Northern Bank is committed to continuing to meet their banking needs. We have not taken this decision lightly. Over recent years the banking habits of consumers and our customers have changed — with many preferring to use other ways of managing their finances rather than relying solely on the branch.”

After a review of the Crossmaglen branch, Mr Wilcox said, “Crossmaglen has been found to be less sustainable than others.”

The Newry and Portadown branches will now extend their opening hours starting from Saturday 12th May in a bid to provide flexibility for customers affected by the closures.
