Newry’s Lost Generation, with Carmel Morgan

Carmel left Newry and moved to Australia

Name: Carmel Morgan.

Age: 22.

Education/experience: Diploma in medical and legal administration.

What part of Newry & Mourne are you originally from? Glenn.

When did you leave Newry? August 2011.

Why did you leave Newry? I really wanted to take 12 months and travel. There were no prospects for me in Newry and I felt that this was the only way to get experience and build a better future for myself.

Who did you go to Australia with? My boyfriend and two friends.

What are you doing now in Australia? Are you working? I work for the Planning department for the Government of Western Australia. It is great experience for me as I have not been able to use my experience to its full potential.

Are you enjoying life away from Newry? Yes it’s been an amazing experience as I have never been away from home before.

What do you miss most about Newry? Where do I start, the food; nothing beats home grown Irish spuds. I also miss my friends and family. Simple Sunday night traditions such as a film and a La Dolce Vita. A cold pint of Coors light to start the weekend.

When will you return to Newry or if you don’t know, then would you like to eventually return here? We will return home but we have no idea as to when just yet.

Career ambition: To be a Nurse for St John’s Hospice.

What would you say to anybody still living in Newry who can’t find work? Follow your dreams, don’t let them become a faint memory. If you want to travel then just do it. Newry will be there when you are finished. You may regret it in later life its all about taking a chance.

Anything else you would like to add? I would like to wish all of my friends and family a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2012.
