T’is the season to recycle

The countdown to Christmas has started, and Newry and Mourne Council is encouraging us all to keep the party going by remembering to recycle over the festive period. We are recycling more at home than ever before, and the great news is, the recycling rate for Newry and Mourne Council now stands at 33%.

Over Christmas continue to do your bit for your environment by recycling as much waste as possible. Up to 60% of the waste we produce at Christmas can be recycled, most of which can now be recycled in your blue bin.

Mayor Charlie Casey encouraged all residents to continue recycling over the festive holidays. He said, “with such a vast amount of materials that can now be recycled, Christmas is the perfect time to make full use of your recycling bins.”

Hundreds of tonnes of cardboard, wrapping paper and Christmas cards are thrown away each year after Christmas but now these along with lots of unexpected Christmas items like chocolate and sweet tins, plastic and cardboard packaging, aerosol cans and even clean tinfoil can now be recycled in your blue bin. To save space, remember to wash and squash all your bottles and cans.

Newry and Mourne District Council will maintain collections during the holiday season. This year your blue bin collection will be week commencing the 2nd January. Brown bin collections remain on a monthly collection throughout the winter months and householders are urged to continue to recycle any extra food waste over the festive season. Garden waste and cold ashes can also be recycled in your brown bin.
