To mark the occasion and support the local community, the RRT partnered with other local charities and community groups, including Women’s Aid Armagh Down, Simon Community Newry, and Northern Ireland Housing Executive, and served 200 hot burger meals and refreshments to the public, inviting them to learn more about the support available in their local community.

The 2nd – 8th December was also Homelessness Awareness Week, and partner organisations set up pop-up stands to share information about their work helping people access housing, with the meals and refreshments provided by the RRT encouraging passersby to get involved and learn more about their work and support services available.

The RRT is formed of volunteers from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and is dedicated to putting compassion into action by providing practical support to other charities and emergency services.

BELLEEK LIVING NEWRY

Clinton Humphris, RRT Local Team Leader, says, “Our volunteers are always ready to mobilise and put compassion into action by helping those in need – whether by supporting emergency services on the frontline or supporting the work of other charities.

“On International Volunteer Day especially, it was extremely rewarding for the RRT to work together with such great organisations that do incredible work in Newry and beyond.

“Nothing compares to the feelgood factor you get when you are able to provide genuine assistance to people in a time of need, and we encourage everyone to think of ways they can get involved to support their local communities.”

Marianne McCaul, Accommodation Manager at Simon Community Newry, says, “I would like to thank the RRT for their efforts today.

“We didn’t let the rainy weather dampen our spirits and it was so important for us to be able to raise awareness of the scale of homelessness in our community and let people know about the work we do.

“We are very grateful for the RRT’s continued support over the years, and for helping us promote our work by serving their signature delicious burger meals to the public.”
