Newry’s Lost Generation, with Brendan Morgan

Brendan left Newry for Australia

Name: Brendan Morgan.

Age: 24

Education/experience: I’ve a BSc Degree in Psychology.

What part of Newry & Mourne are you originally from? I’m from the Windmill Road in Newry.

When did you leave Newry? July 2011.

Why did you leave Newry? There was absolutely no jobs. Also, it’s the same thing every day living in Newry. The night life was getting boring, a lot of people were leaving and because i’m still young, I wanted the experience of travelling and seeing as much of the world as possible.

Who did you go to Australia with? I went on my own.

What are you doing now in Australia? Are you working? I’ve worked many jobs since arriving in Australia. I’ve worked for removal companies to taking down marquees, making wheelie bins, working in a bar and a call centre.

Are you enjoying life away from Newry? Yeah, it took a while to get used to but the weather, the things to do, the amount of jobs that you can walk in and out of and the people I’ve met (other backpackers) from all over the world have made it an amazing experience. You learn a lot about yourself travelling.

What do you miss most about Newry? I miss home because I miss my friends and family and the Irish people in general; Australians are nothing like the Irish, they are ignorant and rude with no sense of humour and just aren’t as laid back as the Irish even with our bad times money-wise.

When will you return to Newry or if you don’t know, then would you like to eventually return here? I’ll return when my one year visa is up but then I plan to travel to America or Europe, I want to travel as much as possible, see as much as possible. I also want to study more too.

Career ambition (i.e. your perfect job): I have done every job you can think of but I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I want to return and do my PGCE then travel again and maybe even get a teaching job abroad. Depending if I find somewhere I like enough to stay for life though, but if I had to choose Australia or Ireland I’d choose Ireland.

What would you say to anybody still living in Newry who can’t find work? Travel! Why be stuck in a job, most likely a dead end job that you hate? You only live once.
