Irwin brands OAP attack gang as ‘thugs’
Newry and Armagh DUP Assemblyman Councillor William Irwin MLA has condemned those responsible for attacking two elderly men in their home at Lurganare Cross on the outskirts of Newry. Men armed with iron bars forced their way into the home and struck one of the elderly brothers when he tried to stop the men ransacking the house. The gang made off with pension money and the brothers have received treatment for minor injuries sustained during the attack.
Irwin branded those responsible as “thugs” stating, “This is a totally ridiculous and shocking attack and those who carried it out are nothing more than thugs, it really doesn’t get any lower than this. I wish the men well as they recover from this ordeal. Attacking elderly men who I understand have been subjected to break-ins before is really untenable and I hope those behind this attack are apprehended.”
He added, “I know the issue of tougher sentencing for those who attack the elderly has been debated recently but here we have another shocking incident where elderly people are beat up in their own home when at their time of life, they should be enjoying peace and quiet without the fear and anxiety of something like this occurring. More must be done to protect our elderly and remove the anxiety that many elderly folk suffer as a result of attacks like these.”
