Concerned Newry residents create Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in The Meadow

Concerned residents in The Meadow, Newry have come together to create a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

The announcement comes after recent incidents in the local housing estate including two break-ins and the burning of an elderly woman’s car.

The meeting, initially organised by local man Alex Kelly and some concerned residents, is also supported by the Meadow and Armagh Road Community Association.

Gerry McDonald from the committee attended a recent community policing meeting in Ballybot House and said that although the burglary rate in the area is down by 5%, PCSP representatives would attend any future meetings with the concerned residents.

With 123 members already and a WhatsApp group aiming to help local residents “keep an eye” on each other to prevent crime, the group hopes to deter criminals from wreaking havoc in the area.

The recent meeting in Whitegates Community Centre was attended by Independent Councillor Gavin Malone, Alliance’s Helena Young, Sinn Fein MP Mickey Brady and Sinn Fein Councillor Charlie Casey.

One concerned resident told Newry Times, “We are hoping to get as much support as possible from the local community.

“We want everyone in the area to look out for each other to make The Meadow and Armagh Road a safe place for residents.

“The support we’ve received so far from the wider Newry area and political representatives has been fantastic and we really appreciate people giving up their time to help us.”

I grew up and lived in the meadow for many years and was once the envy of estates all over Newry plus everybody was safe. I can’t remember any break ins ever happening in the meadow when i was growing up although it was a different place then. These break ins are a shame and its great to see the community doing something about it. The people of the meadow deserve better especially the people in their twighlight years. I really hope it is sorted and the good people of the meadow can get back to feeling safe in their own homes again just as i remember it in the good old days.
