Newry the first place in Ireland to host eye-catching new structure ‘Live 4 Love’
This Friday 30 August, Buttercrane Shopping Centre will play host to an eye-catching new structure from Sydney, Australia as part of ‘Pride in Newry’ – International UK & Ireland Pride Festival 2019, this weekend in the City.
‘Live 4 Love’ is an inflatable art structure standing some 20’ tall, with brightly coloured abstract shapes, from two Australian artists – architect Maurice Goldberg and film and stage designer Matthew Aberline, to illustrate the history of LGBTQI+ community in three dimensions.

Goldberg and Aberline were commissioned to create pride-related art for Sydney’s Mardi Gras Parade last year.
The installation has just been displayed in the World Trade Centre Oculus and this is the first time it’ll be displayed in Ireland.
The artists used a variety of unconventional materials to execute the project, including spinnaker cloth, printed graphic, textiles and webbing.
The structure is even more elaborate at night when it will be illuminated with LED lights placed inside.
Aberline described his work, “On the first level it’s all about fun, and it’s about love, and it’s about joy, and it’s about colour, but when you look at it in a deeper way…it has a greater depth to it.”
Aberline says that the reward is witnessing the public interact with the work. “Our work is about happiness and it’s about play, it’s really lovely seeing people engage with it and be part of it and understand it.”
Centre Manager, Peter Murray told Newry Times, “Pride is a great event for our city, getting bigger and more colourful every year.
“We have supported Newry Pride for a number of years now and are delighted to continue our support of Pride Newry this year as they host Pride In Newry – International UK & Ireland Pride Festival 2019.
“As a key retail destination for Newry, Buttercrane wanted to get involved in the city-wide celebrations, especially as this year’s theme is all about showing support for LGBTQI+ community and their families, which is something that we strongly support.”
He added, “I am sure the “Live 4 Love” installation will become a real focal point of the weekend for creating lots of great photographic opportunities.”
“Live 4 Love” will remain at the Buttercrane Shopping Centre from Friday 30 through Saturday 31 August.
