Raw sewage ‘seeping out of manholes’ in Newry estate

Newry SDLP Councillor Michael Savage has called for sewers serving The Meadow area to be monitored as part of the ongoing Area Drainage Plan for the city.

Councillor Michael Savage made the call after NI Water staff met with him and local residents of the Killeavy Road in The Meadow recently to discuss ongoing flooding which has resulted in raw sewage seeping out of manholes in the green in the estate in recent weeks.

Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Savage stated, “The people of The Meadow and Killeavy Road, in particular, have been tortured for years with flooding and their toilets filling to the brim as the system backs up.

“Children are being put at risk with raw sewage coming out the manholes in the green where they play and something has to be done to bring to an end a saga that has lasted in the area for decades.

“I attended a site meeting with NI Water staff and local residents this week and we walked the pathway of the drainage system in the area and there is either a potential pipe breakage or a blockage in the system or there is a major issue with capacity and this could potentially take years to resolve.

“NI Water staff informed us that there are ongoing surveys now taking place in the Newry area as part of the Area Drainage Plan and we have asked that The Meadow is included as part of the flow monitoring process that is taking place,” he continued.

“NI Water has agreed to carry out further investigations and will report back in the coming months as to the extent of the problem and whether it requires minor repairs or has to be overhauled as part of major capacity works.

“Without a Government in place in Stormont major capacity works could take years and this is another example of how an Assembly not sitting is impacting on the lives of ordinary people,” Councillor Savage added.
