Newry motorists warned not to park in e-charging points
SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty has warned local motorists that parking enforcement teams are to take action against those who park in e-car charging points across Newry City.
Speaking to Newry Times, McNulty explained, “I have been contacted by local motorists who have invested in new e-cars because of their environmental impacts and they have expressed their frustration at the way in which other motorists are parking in charging point spaces, who are not driving electric cars.
“Whilst I recognize that finding a parking space can often be difficult, that doesn’t mean motorists should park in bays designated as charging points for electric cars.
“I have raised this issue with both Transport NI and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
He continued, “I have been advised that light-touch of enforcement will be taking place in the coming days, however, from 1 May 2018 fixed penalty notices will be issued.
“I welcome these actions and in particular the light-touch approach where anyone found parking in these bays in the coming days will be advised that enforcement action will follow.
McNulty added, “This will allow those who do park in the designated charging point bays to park more appropriately in the future.”
