Local football round up, 18th February 2012
Following pitch inspections made by the council on Friday it was decided that only the pitches at Derryleckagh, Norman Brown park and Orior Park were deemed playable for football on Saturday.
Premier division
It was first against second in the league table as Windmill Stars took on Killeavy United at Olympic Park, Derryleckagh. Joe McEvoy capitalised on a poor clearance by the Killeavy goalkeeper to give Windmill the opening goal. Killeavy battled for an equaliser and nearly got it 20 minutes into the second half when they hit the crossbar with a header from two yards out. This was the turning point in the game as Windmill scored their second goal minutes later when young Josh McKeown struck the ball home from 20 yards out. McKeown then grabbed his second and Windmill’s third goal when he tapped the ball in from close range a minute from time.
Damolly clawed themselves three points closer to safety after a hard fought win over Killowen Celtic at Norman Brown Park. George Purdy scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give Damolly their second win in succession. The Shandon park side will hope to build on these two results and push themselves up the table.
First division
Villa Rovers picked up three points against Ashgrove Rovers in a low key encounter at Willie Davis park, Derryleckagh. A brace from Jude Rooney and one from Gerard McGinty was enough to see off the Ashgrove challenge. Simon Gregory was Villas best player on the day.
Mid Ulster shield
A very experienced Bessbrook United hosted a youthful Newry City reserves side at Orior park in the quarter final of the Mid Ulster shield. It was a keenly contested match on a very trying surface for the players. Newry’s second string side created plenty of opportunities in the first period but found Peter Murphy in the Bessbrook goal in inspired form. Mark Patton gave Bessbrook the lead shortly before the half time whistle to give them the advantage at the interval.
The young Newry reserve side fought back in the second period and leveled the scoreline minutes into the second half through Sean Hand. Both sides attacked in search of a second goal and the best chances fell to Bessbrook – Peter Markey and Philip Hughes in particular guilty of missing some great opportunities. The latter of the two though was not to be denied and 10 minutes from time Hughes stroked the ball home to send Bessbrook into the semi finals. These are exciting times for Bessbrook United as they are in a strong position in the league and are also through to the quarter finals of the Junior cup.
Newry Celtic’s Mid Ulster cup run came to an end as they were beaten 5-3 by Ambassadors in Portadown.
