Killer bug discovered in Daisy Hill

Health officials have said that pseudomonas bacteria has been detected in water outlets at Daisy Hill Hospital. The Public Health Agency has said that no babies at the hospital have been infected.

The infection has killed four babies in separate incidents at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry in December and the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast last month. It has also been found at Craigavon Area Hospital in County Armagh and the Erne Hospital in County Fermanagh.

A spokeswoman for the Public Health Agency (PHA) has said that measures were already in place at affected neonatal units throughout Northern Ireland to ensure babies do not come into contact with pseudomonas. The spokeswoman also said that sterile water is used in the direct care of newborns and that taps within neonatal units are currently being replaced as a result of the outbreaks.

The PHA spokeswoman said, “It is not clear at this stage exactly what the implications are of finding pseudomonas in water supplies and what longer-term monitoring is required. National guidance is being developed urgently for the whole of the UK, with experts taking account of all of the scientific evidence available, including the evolving situation in Northern Ireland.”
