25% of adults still own a favourite childhood toy
Many grown-ups still like to snuggle up with their favourite childhood toy to help them get to sleep or relax after a stressful day at work, while a quarter (25%) of adults still own at least one of their favourite childhood toys, according to research released by the UK’s largest toy retailer, Argos and children’s charity, Barnardo’s.
The study was commissioned to mark the fourth year of the Argos Toy Exchange with Barnardo’s which runs until Friday 20th November.
Argos and Barnardo’s customers are encouraged to donate pre loved toys to their local Argos or Barnardo’s store in exchange for a £5 toy voucher towards a £35 minimum spend. The donated toys can then be sold in Barnardo’s network of shops, raising vital funds for the charity.
The research also revealed that one of the reasons why adults don’t like to part with their treasured teddies is in order to pass them on to loved ones.
Twenty one per cent of women admit to having their toys on display in their home while men will keep a treasured toy out of sight in a drawer or cupboard.
This year Argos and Barnardo’s have teamed up with businesswoman, TV presenter and mum-of-two Louise Redknapp to launch the Argos Toy Exchange which will raise much needed funds to help disadvantaged children.
Louise said, “I’m very excited to be a part of the fourth Argos Toy Exchange, it’s an incredibly worthwhile cause and one which can help make Christmas that little bit more special for disadvantaged families.
“With one in 20 people saying they would happily donate all of their toys that are no longer played with to charity, I’m thrilled to be part of an initiative which allows other children to experience the same joy that a toy once gave them.
“With more than 40 Argos stores and 36 Barnardo’s stores across Northern Ireland it makes it easy to visit a local branch so you can get donating.”
“My favourite toy as a child was a pink knitted doll called Jemima, she brings back so many wonderful memories of growing up, my mum still has her for safe keeping as I can’t pass her on to my two boys,” Louise adds.
Lynda Wilson, Director Barnardo’s NI said, “We support some of the most vulnerable young people, such as those growing up in poverty and those living in care. Over the last three years we have had generous support from Argos’ customers and hopefully this year we will be able to help even more.”
