Derek Baker, Permanent Secretary of the Department for Employment and Learning, announced the winners at an awards ceremony held in Parliament Buildings.

Local lady Julia came back into education in 2006 after taking a career break to raise a family. Starting with a level 2 and level 3 in Beauty Therapy she quickly put these to good use and opened her own Beauty Therapy business.

At the same time she trained as an assessor and began teaching part time in Southern Regional College, where she continued her own studies.

With a focus on business she has achieved the level 5 in Beauty Therapy Management Studies and extended her repertoire by achieving a range of vocational awards in Bridal Upstyling, Women’s Hairdressing and Cutting Men’s Hair.

Congratulating the VQ Learner of the Year winner and finalists, Baker said, “This year we had ten very strong finalists selected for the Learner of the Year Award and each and every one of them should be extremely proud of themselves.

He added, “They come from a wide range of ages, backgrounds and professions which demonstrates quite clearly the breadth and flexibility of vocational learning.”
