Trade Unions Umbrella Group AGM set for Newry
Members of Newry and District Trades Union Council will gather on Wednesday night at Ballybot House for their annual general meeting.
Newry TUC is an umbrella group for local trade union members and helps to coordinate campaigning, lobbying and activism throughout the area.
The Chairperson of Newry Trades Union Council Cara Murchan outlined the critical issues facing the people of Northern Ireland at the moment.
She said, “Last month Newry TUC hosted a public meeting in Ballybot House in conjunction with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) to promote awareness about the negative social and economic aspects of the Stormont House Agreement.
“Since January the various Stormont Executive Departments have published details of the cuts to their budgets for the year ahead. It makes depressing reading, most public services will face drastic cuts which will result in poorer service delivery,” she insisted.
“This is why the Trade Union movement are calling for a strike on March 13th. We need to send a clear message to the main political parties that enough is enough.”
Murchan added, “The Newry area needs an active trade union movement. Many local workers are being unfairly treated with regards to rates of pay, terms and conditions and fundamental human rights. Newry TUC is made up of volunteers.
“To increase our effectiveness we need more help from the local branches of various trade unions. If you are not in a trade union, join one; if you are a union member become active and let’s help each other to make more workplaces in Newry pay proper rates of pay in environments which promote equality and dignity.”

Well done Cara! It is about time the Unions took the lead on social issues, as our elected representatives are being constrained by party politics and party guidlines…Daisy hill stroke department and the huge price hikes at Newry swimming pool are two examples of the stormont tory austerity cuts that are being implemented by our own elected representatives. The most vulnerable people within our community are being treated with disdain and contempt!
