OTR letter given to murder suspect of man found dead in Newry Canal
SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has said that Gerry Kelly has serious questions to answer about the murder of Gareth O’Connor following the discovery that he delivered an OTR letter to the chief murder suspect in 2008.
Bradley said, “It’s almost 10 years since Gareth O’Connor’s body was found in a car submerged in Newry Canal.
“His family, like so many others, have desperately searched for the truth about what happened to their son. The fact that today’s inquest hearing has been postponed as a result of the discovery of an On The Run letter is deeply disturbing and leaves serious questions to be answered, not least of all by Sinn Féin and Gerry Kelly in particular.
“A week after Gareth went missing, his father, Mark, phoned Gerry Kelly, and later met with him in his home, in an attempt to understand what happened to his son and who was behind it.
“Mr Kelly said that he had no information and yet it emerges today that he delivered an OTR letter to the chief murder suspect. Gerry Kelly was not a postman for NIO, the existence of this letter and his delivery of it points strongly to IRA involvement in the murder.
Bradley added, “Gerry Kelly must now come forward and reveal all he knows about this horrendous case. He has evaded the Westminster OTR inquiry, he denies victims and their families truth and he denies them justice. He cannot be allowed to do so again.”
