McAteer seeks ‘effective’ Animal Welfare after Newry incidents
SDLP Councillor Kevin McAteer has condemned the recent incidents of animal cruelty in Newry.
Following an attack where a cat was almost killed with a crossbow McAteer has called for greater implementation of animal welfare legislation and tougher repercussions for those found guilty of abusing animals.
Speaking to Newry Times, he said, “This most recent act of cruelty is completely at odds with the compassionate and animal loving public of Newry. This mindless savagery in this day and age is hard to come to terms with.
“I would like to add my voice to those calling for tougher punishments for those found guilty of animal abuse. We often hear calls for government to protect the most vulnerable in our society and this surely includes animals who cannot stand up or speak out for themselves.
He added, “I will be working with my party colleagues in the Assembly to press for greater implementation of animal welfare legislation.”
