‘Remove all valuables from car during festive season’ – Newry police
Police in Newry and Mourne are reminding the public to remove all valuables from their cars when they are out shopping during the festive season.
Sergeant Pete Stevenson said, “As part of our work to keep people safe this Christmas we have been patrolling busy shopping and parking areas.
“During the course of one patrol we came across quite a number of cars with valuables clearly on display including iphones, handbags, purses and full car loads of Christmas shopping.
“Thieves will grab any opportunity they can to make a quick and easy profit and an iphone or purse left sitting in clear view in an empty car is like a gift for them,” he explained.
“It only takes a few seconds to smash a window, grab the valuables and run off. The property can then be sold on by the thief and you are left out of pocket, not only for the stolen property but also for your damaged vehicle. Please, please do not make a Christmas gift of your possessions.
“We will continue with our patrols in the run up to Christmas and leave advice letters for vehicle owners where we see valuables on display. If you would like more crime prevention advice, please contact your crime prevention officer on 101,” Sergeant Stevenson added.
