Newry marks 100th Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
Councillors, Chief Executives, Commanders, and Communities came together today to mark the 100th Neighbourhood Watch scheme for the District in Annaclogmullin, Lislea.
Mayor Cllr Daire Hughes stated, “I am proud that Newry and Mourne is the first in E District to achieve 100 schemes, spanning from Annalong through Newry City and now right into the heart of South Armagh; a testament to the community spirit and concern for safety that we all share.”
PCSP Chair Cllr. Andy Moffett added, “It is a significant milestone that we mark here today in Lislea, and I congratulate the local coordinators who have put themselves forward to establish the schemes, in partnership with the PSNI and the PCSP.
“Lislea will be a stronger, safer community as a result and will lead to the establishment of even more schemes in the area,” he added.
Area Commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck stated, “Since Neighbourhood Watch was first introduced in 2004; local neighbourhood teams have worked tirelessly with their community safety colleagues in Council to ensure NHW has grown from strength to strength.
“It has proven over these years to be a very effective deterrent, tackling fear of crime particularly for older and more vulnerable members of our society. Since 2007 the number of schemes in Newry & Mourne has gone from 16 to us now celebrating 100 what a fantastic achievement.”
The 100th Neighbourhood Watch Scheme will also be marked at a formal gathering of Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators on 11th December in the Council Boardroom.
