Newry and Mourne Youth Council host open space event
Newry and Mourne Youth Council, which is an SELB Youth Service supported programme, managed an open space event during local democracy week for young people from various youth groups.
This included The Mournes Youth Forum, Warrenpoint Youth Forum, The Fews Youth Forum and Ring of Gullion Youth Forum. In total over 60 youth attended and the event was a great success.
The theme was ‘Young people and democracy’ and the open space style event brought together a range of people, to discuss issues around the theme. These events are based around workshops that the young people create and manage themselves.
Some of the key issues discussed were: should the voting age be lower, what do councillors do for young people, what do Newry and Mourne Council do, religion and politics, educating young people on politics, what councillors do for young people and if the legal age for alcohol should be lowered.
The event was attended by several local councillors and supported by Newry and Mourne District Council Good Relations Team.
Maureen O’Gorman, Area Youth Worker, SELB Youth Service commented, “This was a unique and fantastic opportuninty for our elected representatives to engage with our young people and have honest and thought provoking conversations and we appreciate those that gave their time to attend and support the event.”
