Best of the Best for Mayobridge kickboxer
On Saturday 5th April Mayobridge kickboxer Curtis Clyde and his team-mates entered the Best of the Best kickboxing championships in Dublin.
Curtis fought in the mens senior semi-contact points fighting division and placed 3rd overall.
This was Curtis’ first time fighting in a semi contact division and also his first time competing in 8 months due to fracturing his hand in August 2013 whilst competing in Dublin.
Entering the Best of the Best championships for the first time Curtis narrowly missed out on a place in the final after being defeated in the semi final by a single point.
Had he progressed he would have fought fellow team mate Darren McGee for 1st place in the final. Darren, who hails from Dundalk, stormed through the divison comfortably to claim gold and win the category outright.
The Irish martial arts academy is based in Williamsons Place in Dundalk and is spearheaded by world champion sensei Eamon Lawler. Eamon took a strong team to the championships and his team certainly made an impact with a huge medal haul, with all his students placing in the top 3 of their divisions.
Curtis joined up with the Irish Martial Arts academy towards the end of 2013 and hasn’t looked back since.
He explained to Newry Times, “The training and support we get from Eamon and even parents of club members is amazing. It’s like one big family and everybody gets on so well.
He added, “We are all looking foward to fighting again at the end of the month in Drogehda where we will be taking an even bigger squad and hoping to aim higher.”
